WHILE the victors celebrated on the mat and the runners-ups retreated to the locker rooms, rival coaches Lucky San Juan of Arellano and Ruf Rosario of Perpetual hugged each other.
The AU Chiefs Squad pulled off a near-flawless performance to dethrone the UPH Altas Perpsquad in the NCAA Season 92 Cheerleading competition at the Mall of Asai Arena on Thursday. But for the two coaches, bitterness simply has no room.
“Ang iniisip ko lang noon na me and Coach Lucky are best friends, ang turing niya sa akin ay ate,” shared Rosario, who has been friends with San Juan for years.
Last year it was the Altas Perpsquad mentor who cheered up San Juan, whose team lost by only two points to the Las Pinas-based cheerleaders.
“Nag-usap kami na, 'Grabe ‘yung ginawa mo, grabe ‘yung preparation mo,'” said San Juan.
“Lumapit siya sa akin and doon ko na-feel na there's nothing wrong and nothing to worry about,” added Rosario.
Although it was San Juan’s team which spoiled Rosario’s quest for a back-to-back and a 10th title overall, the outspoken UPH coach wholeheartedly accepted the loss.
“They deserve it and congratulations to coach Lucky,” said Rosario.
After the year-long preparation and competition, the two mentors plan to go on a break along with their other coach friends.
They plan to spend some rest and relaxation at San Juan’s new home.
“Close talaga kami, coach Lucky, coach Ramon of JRU, coach Arlou of San Beda, kaming pat solid kami talaga na friends,” shared Rosario.
“Kaya after season let’s celebrate pero sagot niya muna siya ang champion so sa grocery dapat one year siya manlibre,” he added with a laugh.
