ONE of National University Pep Squad’s pyramid formations stood out during its UAAP Season 87 Cheerdance Competition title-winning routine.
Coined by head coach Gab Bajacan as the ‘ferris wheel,’ the said sequence saw two NU flyers spun around in circular motions atop two separate pyramids.
This formation proved to be the cherry on top of NU’s competition-best 85 score in the pyramid criterion.

The architect behind the rousing sequence, comparable to the likes of UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe's iconic helicopter toss stunt in 2006, wasn’t Bajacan himself.
It was one of his creative deputies in Karl Pabilonia, a cheerdance veteran in his own right, whom Bajacan duly gave credit to.
“Sobrang thankful po kami kay coach Karl Pabilonia. Thank you so much sa inyong creativity sa pyramid na ‘yun,” NU Pep Squad’s head coach said.
“Kami kasing coaches, hinahati namin ‘yung task namin doon, and it's working talaga na yung creativity namin na bawat isa ay nailalabas namin sa canvas na yun.
“They [athletes] are the canvas of our work talaga. Sila ‘yung gagawa ng masterpiece namin. ‘Yung creativity ni coach Karl, thank you so much coach.”
Fan favorite maneuver
Not even NU expected that stunt to gain such a warm reception inside the Mall of Asia Arena and on social media just as they pulled it off.
In fact, they didn’t even have a name for that pyramid when they drew it up.
To honor what the stunt resembled, Bajacan opted to call it the ‘ferris wheel’ himself as a fitting second act to their Season 86 ‘mekus-mekus’ stunt.
“Wala [siyang pangalan] actually. Kung anong ipangalan niyo na lang, ferris wheel pyramid. ‘Di rin namin in-expect na magugustuhan ng lahat yun. Last year kasi meron kaming tornado, ‘yung mekus-mekus na tawag," he said.
“Siguro ngayon, it's the ferris wheel pyramid, kaya salamat po sa pag-appreciate ng ginawa namin. Maraming salamat po.”
