TO join the ranks of UAAP Cheerdance Competition titleholders, Adamson Pep Squad drew inspiration from legends in the entertainment industry as it came up with a uniquely entertaining routine worthy of the title.
On Saturday, in front of 19,851 fans inside the Mall of Asia Arena, the San Marcelino-based cheerdancers left eight-time titleholders University of of Santo Tomas and University of the Philippines, four-time champions National University, and two-time winners Far Eastern University in the shade.
Hoping to be at par with the UAAP CDC kings and queens, AdU Pep Squad coach Jam Lorenzo found inspiration from an original Pinoy music legend - VST & Co.
“After kasi noong Polynesian (theme) last year nag-plan up na ako ng possible routine for next year,” he said. “I was really, really inspired to make an OPM routine, kasi sa cheerdance bihira gumamit ng OPM, bihira manalo ‘yung gumamit ng OPM.”
“And kung pipili ako ng OPM, why not ‘yung pinaka-iconic na, ‘yung pinaka kilala na, mapabata or matanda man, so I really waited for signs,” he added.
Before the competition, Lorenzo admitted he was looking for a sign on what direction to take his planned OPM routine, and immediately found one while watching a noontime show.
“Nagsimula ‘yun noong nanonood akong Eat Bulaga!, and then kapag nagba-browse ako sa Facebook puro retro, so sabi ko ‘ano to?’” he shared.
“So sabi ko, why not VST & Co.? Tutal very iconic siya sa Philippines and sure akong makaka-relate lahat and mapapa-groove talaga lahat,” he added.
AdU Pep Squad kicked off its six-minute routine with tosses and stunts before turning the entire arena into a disco party.
The cheerdancers’ energy rubbed off on the audience as they started their playlist with the song 'Sumayaw Sumunod,' followed by 'Swing,' 'Rock, Baby, Rock' and 'Awitin Mo At Isasayaw Ko.'
Then the 'Tayo'y Magsayawan' song brought the house down as the cheerdancers sported star-shaped glasses with a disco ball to complete the retro feel.
Right before the announcement of the winner, chants of ‘Adamson! Adamson!’ filled the arena.
Indeed, AdU Pep Squad got what they wanted.
“It’s not how intense or serious your theme is, it’s about how you win the hearts of the people,” said Lorenzo. “‘Yun ang pinaka-goal, pinaka-motto ng Adamson, to win hearts and trophies.”
