THREE boxers from Quezon and two from Zambales scored huge wins Wednesday to advance in the PLDT-ABAP National Capital Region-Luzon Area tournament at the Capitol Grounds in Iba, Zambales.
Aldrin Signar defeated Olongapo’s Lester Lhan Tualla, 14-6, in the 46kg junior boys pinweight, Jessie Diaz stopped Tarlac’s Christian Dave Manalo in the first round (Referee Stopped Contest) of their 50kg juniors boys flyweight bout, while Richard Agora scored a second-round RSC victory over Zambales’ Edwin Quinto Jr. in the 46kg youth boys pinweight division.
Two 18-year-old hometown bets advanced to the finals of the Luzon qualifier of the tournament.
Lloyd Trinidad forced Laguna’s Apolinar Penitente into retirement in the third round of their 60kg youth boys lightweight division, while Jess Ganayan defeated Kabaka Manila’s Jay-R Mingote, 7-2, in the 53kg youth boys flyweight class.
In other matches, Sorsogon’s Fernel Gastpi outpointed Raymart Foster of Matnog, 14-6, in the 46kg junior boys pinweight, Lawrence Ordonio of San Fernando City beat Urdaneta’s Christopher Salazar, (RSC) in the first round of the 50 kg junior boys flyweight, and Rizal Technological University’s Mark Alex Brin won over Lucena City’s Arvin Yordan (RSC) in the second round.
The winners in this leg will join the qualifiers from the regional competitions in Bago City in Visayas and General Santos City in Mindanao battle in the National Championship set Feb. 17-23 in Maasin, Southern Leyte.
“We’re expecting the action to get even more intense as we approach the medal bouts,” said ABAP president Ricky Vargas.
