THE world of boxing is filled with sob stories of fallen champions leading miserable lives at the end of their careers.

Don't make the mistake of including Malcom 'Eagle Eye' Tuñacao among them, even if the former World Boxing Council (WBC) now leads a humble life as a garbage collector in the Japanese city of Kobe.

Tunacao's life is far from those heady days when he reigned as world champion as a 22-year old after a seventh-round TKO win over Medgoen Siungsurat - the same Thai fighter who dealt Manny Pacquiao one of his few career defeats.

But don't feel sorry for the guy.

After a career marked by 35 wins (20 by knockout), three losses and three draws, he relocated to Japan where he now works as a garbage collector - and proud of it.

"Okay lang din, basta sa trabaho ko, hindi ako nanlalamang ng tao," said Tunacao, now 42. "Marangal s'ya na trabaho. Para sa akin, masaya na ako sa trabaho ko at nagsisikap ako dito para sa pamilya ko."

The Mandaue native said garbage collectors are treated well and respected in Japan.

"Mataas ang tingin sa aming mga basurero dito, sir. Kapag nakita kaming mga basurero, masaya sila," he said. "Maraming tao nagbibigay ng tubig, nagbibigay ng pera minsan. Kanina nga binigyan akong kape at tinapay."
