THE Philippine boxing team is already assured of at least five bronze medals in the 27th Southeast Asian Games in Myanmar, either due to the luck of the draw or lack of entries.
Flyweight Rey Saludar, bantamweight Mario Fernandez, and welterweight Wilfredo Lopez drew byes in the men's division, as did bantamweight Iris Magno and flyweight Maricris Igam in the distaff side.
Light flyweight Josie Gabuco and featherweight Nesthy Petecio automatically made it to the semifinals due to lack of entries in their respective divisions.
“We are so lucky to have all of these boxers in the semis,” Alliance of Boxing Associations of the Philippines (Abap) executive director Ed Picson said. “We need to hurdle all obstacles that come our way to make sure that everybody will be in the finals.”
Meanwhile, Dennis Galvan starts his defense of his gold two years ago against Cambodia’s Ratha Svay in the men’s 64kg division for the right to fight in the semifinal round.
