MACAU – A nutritionist should know best.
Buboy Fernandez believed the failure of Chris Algieri to make the catch weight outright in his fight against Manny Pacquiao was a big blow to his bid for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight crown.
“Kahit . 4 o .2 pa 'yan, malaking bagay yan mentally,” said Fernandez, the longtime second assistant of trainer Freddie Roach in Pacquiao’s corner.
During Saturday’s official weigh-in at the Cotai Arena, the 30-year-old Algieri came in at 144.4 and 144.2, respectively, to go over the catch weight of 144 lbs.
Only after an hour of sweating did the 5-foot-10 challenger finally make the weight at 143.6 lbs.
But for Fernandez, the damage was already done, saying, “Psychologically, may effect sa isang boxer 'yun.”
More so for Algieri, who owns a bachelor's degree in health care science from Stony Brook University.
“Nutritionist siya, kaya dapat mas alam niya pa nga `yun,” said the boyhood friend of Pacquiao.
