Week-long press tour hypes Banal-Sorsingyu world title fight

FILIPINO AJ 'Bazooka’ Banal and Thai Pungluang Sorsingyu will embark on a week-long press tour in Cebu and Manila to promote their coming 12-round title fight for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) bantamweight title.

The top two WBO contenders kick off the press tour on Monday noon at the Waterfront Cebu Hotel Casino. They later fly to Manila for the other leg of the tour set on Tuesday.

The 12-round title fight is set on Oct. 20 at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Sorsingyu, ranked No. 2 by the WBO, is set to arrive in the country Sunday along with Michel Du, representing One Songchai Promotions.

Also coming over is WBO International and Asia-Pacific Vice President Leon Panoncillo.

The 24-year-old Thai holds an impressive record of 42-1, with 27 knockouts. He is coming off a stunning fifth round knockout of Ricardo Roa last July 6 in Phuket, Thailand.

Banal meanwhile, will be accompanied by ALA Promotions President and CEO Michael Aldeguer, who vigorously pursued the fight to be staged here following an arduous negotiations.

The 23-year-old Filipino sports a 28-1-1 record, including 20 KOs. Banal, the WBO No.1 challenger, won an eight round unanimous decision over Ruben Manakane in his latest fight held in Dumaguete City last month.

The WBO bantamweight crown was relinquished by Mexican Jorge Arce.
