UNFANCIED Sylvester Lopez gets the biggest break of his career when he vies for the World Boxing Council (WBC) super-flyweight crown against champion Yota Sato at the Yokohama Cultural Gymnasium in Japan.
The 24-year-old Lopez, a native of Kabasalan, Zamboanga Sibugay, is fighting in his first world title match. He arrived in Yokohama three weeks before the bout to get acclimatize with the warm weather.
Lopez carries a 19-3-1 record, with 15 KOs. He’s on a five-fight winning streak after losing to Juan Jose Montes in Guadalajara,Mexico following a fifth round technical decision.
Sato is defending his title for the first time since winning the WBC belt against Suriyan Sor Rungvisal in a 12-round unanimous decision last March in Tokyo, Japan.
The champion has not fought outside of Japan and owns a record of 24-2-1, with 12 KOs.
The three judges scoring the 12-round bout are veteran Lou Moret, David Bilocerkowec, and Omar Mintun. Third man in the ring is Laurence Cole.
