HOUSTON – Guillermo Rigondeaux has all the time in the world to watch potential future opponent Nonito Donaire Jr. fight in the ring on Saturday night (Sunday, Manila time) against Mexican Jorge Arce.
The reigning World Boxing Association (WBA) super-bantamweight champion will not be able to see action as part of the major undercard after his Thai opponent, Poonsawat Kratindaeng, failed to pass the medical test two days before the Top Rank fight card is staged at the Toyota Center.
Rigondeaux, a two-time Olympic gold medallist from Cuba who is now based in Miami, Florida, now plans to watch the action from ringside, hoping to get a shot at the winner of the Donaire-Arce bout where the World Boxing Organization super-bantamweight title of the Filipino is at stake.
But the Cuban has strongly expressed his desire to fight the 30-year-old Donaire in a potentially explosive bout by 2013.
“I want Donaire,” Rigondeaux (11-0, 8 KOs) said through his interpreter.
He lamented the Filipino appeared to have been avoiding him as the Cuban said it appears he’s not under the radar of Donaire.
Curiously, the 'Filipino Flash' has been repeatedly mentioning his name in the same breath as Abner Mares and Anselmo Moreno as among those he’s eyeing to fight by next year.
