PROMISING Aston Palicte faces an uphill fight against Vergilio ‘Maton’ Silvano for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Oriental super flyweight title in the main event of ‘Tibay ng Pinoy’ XI set this weekend at the Bonifacio Naval Station in Taguig City.
The November 13 match for the vacant 112 lbs. title is set for 12 rounds, according to matchmaker-promoter Joven Jimenez of MP Promotions USA.
Nicknamed ‘Mighty,’ Palicte, 24, is regarded as one of the brightest fighters of the MP Gym in Davao City being handled by eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao’s assistant trainer Raides ‘Nonoy’ Neri.
The former International Boxing Federation (IBF) youth super flyweight champion has a record of 17 knockouts in 19 wins with only one loss.
A native of Bago City, Negros Occidental, the former amateur standout fashioned out a fourth-round technical knockout against Fernando Ocon in his last fight on August 14 at the SM City Davao.
Silvano, 25, also has an impressive record of 20-5-1 with 12 knockouts and won the vacant WBO Oriental light flyweight title with a unanimous 12-round decision over Jetly Purisima of General Santos City two years ago.
The southpaw from Omega Gym in Cebu however, lost in his bid for the IBF minimumweight title after losing a 12-round decision against Katsunari Takayama of Japan in December of 2013.
Silvano won his last fight against Ryan Tampus in February via a fourth round stoppage to capture the vacant Philippine Boxing Federation (PBF) flyweight crown at the Dalaguete Sports Center in Cebu.
Seeing action in the main supporting bout is a non-title fight between reigning World Boxing Council (WBC) Asian Boxing Council and Philippine super lightweight champion Adones ‘Ironman’ Cabalquinto (21-0-0) of Davao and Al ‘The Machine Gun’ Rivera (13-2-0) of Sta. Rosa, Laguna.
A total of nine fights are featured in the boxing promotion set to start at 4 p.m.
Admission is free.
“As usual, libre na naman para sa lahat ng tao ang pa-boxing ni Congressman Manny Pacquiao,” said Jimenez.
