LAS VEGAS – After Congressman Manny Pacquiao, Restituto 'Buboy' Fernandez hopes he would be the next to join the august body.
The boyhood pal and longtime cornerman of the boxing superstar is seeking a congressional seat in next year’s national election as one the three nominees of the party list Sel-Jay.
The group representing the sports sector, including motocross, has yet to be approved by the Commission on Elections, but has businessman-sportsman Jay Lacnit and Atty. Alexander Acain as its first two nominees.
Lacnit has been involved in motocross and once sponsored a nationwide tournament where his association with Fernandez began. Buboy is a motocross enthusiast who maintains a large collection of two-wheeled machines in the province.
Buboy admitted to Spin.ph that Pacquiao, the current representative of the lone district of Sarangani, is unaware of his plan to enter politics.
“Hindi pa alam ni brod,” he said. “Baka magulat na lang siya magkita kami sa Kongreso.”
But Fernandez said he and Pacquiao once talked about Buboy’s plan to venture into public service when he initially thought of running for a board member position in Bicol.
“Tinatanong niya ako dati kung kumusta na `yung plano kong tumakbo sa election,” said Fernandez. “Kaso ang iniisip ko rin paano na 'yung pag nag-training na siya.”
Eventually, Buboy said his desire to help Philippine sports – which his childhood friend has long carried in his shoulders – lured him to give politics a shot.
“Marami naman tayong mga kababayan na Pilipino na tunay na magaling sa palakasan,” he said. “Hindi lang ito napagtutuunan ng pansin lalo na `yung mga kabataan na buhat pa sa mga probinsiya.”
Now, he’s starting to talk like a true politician.
