FORMER Asian Games gold medalist Rey Saludar and fellow national team member Gerson Nietes handily won their semifinal matches on Wednesday to set up a gold medal bout in the boxing competitions of the Philippine National Games at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
Saludar, champion in the 2010 Asian Games, repulsed Robin Dingcong, 34-14, in the elite flyweight class to advance to the finals.
Nietes defeated Jake Bornea, 23-15, to earn the right to fight for the gold on Saturday at the Rizal Coliseum.
Junel Cantancio beat James Palicte, 13-11, to move into the quarterfinals of the lightweight division against Risty Apas, a 15-10 winner over Harold Serapion.
Nico Magliquian defeated Jonas Bacho, 24-15, in the bantamweight class to reach the last eight where he will meet Mario Fernandez, who defeated Jeffrey Bagacay, 18-4.
In the youth division, Joash Jordan of General Santos City defeated Jaye Arcilla, 12-9, to move into the finals of the boys’ pinweight class.
Jordan is set to meet Fernel Gaspi of Rizal Technological University, a 31-20 winner over America Gedeon of Cabanatuan, 31-20.
Kevin Jake Enriquez and Lou Alde Regel will meet in the boys’ light flyweight final, as Vergel Deguma and Niko Rogin Santos battle for the flyweight gold.
