THE attempt of Floyd Mayweather Jr. to add swimming to his training regimen only drew a sarcastic reaction from Manny Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach.
“Sounds like we should start calling him Floyd ‘Flipper’ Mayweather,” said Roach, obviously referring to the old television series featuring a dolphin that goes by this name.
Just this week, the unbeaten American posted on his Instagram account a video of him doing his thing on the pool while training and conditioning coach Alex Ariza looks on.
Here's the video:
Mayweather said taking a dip in the pool will help increase his stamina and help him avoid cramps - which Pacquiao suffered just recently in training, by the way – as he enters the final month of training camp heading to his May 3 (Manila time) welterweight title unification bout against the Filipino boxing icon at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
But Roach was hardly impressed by the new strategy.
“Team Mayweather would be wise to add a lifeguard to their corner on fight night because Manny is taking ‘Mr. 47 and 1’ into deep water,” said the seven-time winner of the Trainer of the Year award.
“Swimming lessons or whatever he thinks he is doing will not help him survive the shark-infested waters he will be entering on May 2.”
As a parting shot, Roach also took a dig at Mayweather’s bosom buddy Justin Bieber.
“I’m betting, his little buddy Justin Bieber will be walking him into the ring singing this," Roach said.
By that, he meant the 'Flipper' theme. See video:
