REGARDLESS of his vow to knock out Manny Pacquiao this time, Freddie Roach believes Juan Manuel Marquez will do the contrary come fight night.
The 52-year-old trainer of the eight-division world champion said on Thursday (Friday, Manila time) he expects to see the Mexican, notwithstanding the warrior in him, on the run again when he meets his Filipino rival for the fourth time in the ring on December 8 at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas.
And that’s what he has been preparing the `Pacman’ for in training camp at the Wild Card gym in Los Angeles.
After settling for a draw and two controversial losses in their first three meetings, Marquez, 39, declared the only way for him to win the 12-round fight is to knock Pacquiao out convincingly.
Roach, however, isn’t totally convinced, aware that Marquez will most likely do the same thing he did in his three previous meetings with Pacquiao in the last eight years.
On Thursday, Pacquiao did nine rounds of sparring, which Roach said was a "good day in (training) camp."
“He's getting his timing and distance down,” Roach added.
Still, the veteran trainer said the 33-year-old boxing icon from General Santos City has to continue training hard to perfect his timing and distance against a counter-punching opponent like Marquez.
Pacquiao also showed off his renowned power in the heavy bag, according to Top Rank publicist Fred Sturnberg.
“It is WAR at Wild Card today! @MannyPacquiao is letting it all fly in sparring today,” tweeted the American PR man.
