BRAVE CUELLO FINDS GOOD SAMARITAN: Was Denver Cuello too brave for his own good when he fought, and lost via majority decision, against China's Xiong Zhao Zong for the WBC straw weight title with only one fully functioning arm?
Two weeks before his title shot, Cuello had his shoulder checked by Makati Medical Center orthopedic specialist Beng Javier, who after a couple of tests confirmed that Cuello had a torn rotator cuff muscle on his right shoulder.
The doctor's advice: Cuello should withdraw from his June 28 duel with Xiong.
But Denver pleaded and asked that he be allowed to fight as he didn't want to miss a shot at the world title which he had waited for years to get.
Cuello gave it his all but it was nearly impossible to pull out a win on pure heart, and with a dislocated right shoulder that had to be popped back into place in between rounds.
Five days after the fight, Cuello was back at the Makati Medical Center.
Dr. Javier advised Denver to allow his body to fully heal and recover for another week after which the arthroscopic surgery will be performed - free of charge.
Inspired by Cuello's gallant stand in Dubai last Saturday, Dr. Javier waived his professional fee. He will also ask his physician friends to do the same in support of Cuello's continuing quest for a world title for the Philippines.
To hasten Denver Cuello's immediate return to action, Dr. Javier is throwing in another expensive freebie - a platelet rich plasma treatment on Cuello's injured shoulder.
