WITH time obviously running out, Manny Pacquiao is likely to start sparring right on his first training day at the Wild Card gym with Freddie Roach.
The 33-year-old boxing star from the Philippines arrived in Los Angeles Saturday night (Sunday, Manila time) two weeks late for the scheduled start of his preparations for his December 8 meeting with Mexican rival Juan Manuel Marquez.
Wearing a bright yellow jacket on top of a white short-sleeve polo over jeans, Pacquiao arrived on board Philippine Airlines flight 102 and was met at the LAX International Airport by his regular security staff led by Rob Peters.
The eight-time world champion is expected to take the whole Sunday off, before hooking up with his Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach the following day for the start of a six-week training at the fame Wild Card Gym.
Pacquiao had to defer by two weeks his US training owing to his busy political activities as Sarangani province’s lone representative in Congress, a move that didn’t sit well with Top Rank promoter Bob Arum.
But during his extended stay in the country, Pacquiao already began his conditioning program under Filipino corner man Buboy Fernandez. He even sparred several times against badly-outclassed Rocky Marcial at the boxing gym of Rey Golingan in General Santos City.
Roach, 52, has tapped former World Boxing Championship silver medalist Frankie Gomez as one of three possible sparring partners of Pacquiao.
