THE Philippines came through with a clutch win on Monday. No, it did not involve Jimmy Alapag, and the man himself takes no credit for the last-second, come-from-behind victory by our newly-crowned Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach.
The sports world also chimed in with their own reactions after host Steve Harvey mistakenly proclaimed Miss Colombia the winner before owning up to his mistake and corrected his error.
First, Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson congratulated Harvey for a job well done, before the storm happened.
.@IAmSteveHarvey has done it again, an incredible job hosting the Miss Universe Pageant!— Earvin Magic Johnson (@MagicJohnson) December 21, 2015
Johnson later tweeted his support for Harvey after being bashed online. Some of our own basketball stars, like Jeric Teng and Kelly Williams, showed Harvey some love, while Ranidel de Ocampo tried to provide some comic relief.
I don't understand how a guy can be called these terrible names for committing an honest human mistake.— Jeric Teng (@jericteng) December 21, 2015
It's still amazing to me how mistakes & wrong doings trend overwhelmingly more than good happenings.— Kelly Williams (@KelWilliams21) December 21, 2015
Nagboboxing kasi si evander holyfield bigla nyo pinaghost. Lol #MissUniverse2015— Ranidel De Ocampo (@jutaca33) December 21, 2015
But no tweet is more apt to highlight on this fateful day than from our very own Miss Universe herself. After Manny Pacquiao lost to Floyd Mayweather last May, Wurtzbach, who at the time was Binibining Pilipinas-Universe winner, quickly tweeted a message of comfort to the nation.
Kalma lang guys. Ako bahala. Babawi tayo sa Miss Universe!!— Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach (@PiaWurtzbach) May 3, 2015
True to her word, Wurtzbach didn’t disappoint as she was stellar all through the competition. Congratulations again to our very own Pia Wurtzbach for winning the Miss Universe crown that has eluded the country for 42 years.
