PH trainer Somodio steps out of Roach shadow by guiding Provodnikov to world title

MARVIN Somodio has finally proven he can be his own man.

Trusted by Freddie Roach to act as chief corner of Ruslan Provodnikov in his World Boxing Organization (WBO) light-welterweight title fight against Mike Alvarado, the Filipino didn’t disappoint as he guided the Russian banger to a technical knockout win after the 10th round of the match in Bloomfield, Colorado.

Somodio, a protégée of the 53-year-old Roach, was tasked to call the shots in Provodnikov’s corner as the Hall of Fame trainer is currently in General Santos City for the training camp of boxing star Manny Pacquiao.

A former member of the national training pool of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (Abap), Somodio became an understudy of Roach last year as Pacquiao was preparing for his WBO welterweight title showdown against Timothy Bradley.

It was during that time when Provodnikov was tapped as chief sparring partner of the 34-year-old Pacquiao during his training camp in Baguio City.

Unfortunately, Pacquiao has lost in the two times that Somodio served as Roach assistant trainer, including that fateful sixth-round knockout against Juan Manuel Marquez last year.

But the losing streak came to an end on Saturday night (Sunday, Manila time) even with Roach a thousand miles away from ringside.

Somodio had the 29-year-old Provodnikov sticking to Roach game plan of relentlessly attacking Alvarado, resulting in a pair of knockdowns in the eighth round to the surprise of the partisan crowd wildly cheering their hometown hero.

Eventually, the barrage of punches took its toll on Alvarado that he had to quit on his stool shortly before the 11th round of the scheduled 12-round bout.

“We trained with Freddie for eight weeks exactly, and it has been an awesome training camp. Marvin has been there every day and I know what to do,” said Provodnikov, whose first attempt at a world title ended in failure in a 12-round decision against Bradley last March.

Ironically, Alvarado had just beaten Brandon Rios by unanimous decision in his last fight prior to facing Provodnikov.

Rios is set to take on Pacquiao on November 24 in Macau.
