JOHN RIEL Casimero’s long history with weight issue hounded him once more.
The former three-time world champion failed to make weight in his 10-round super-bantamweight fight against American Saul Sanchez on Sunday in Yokohama, Japan.
The 35-year-old Filipino tipped in two pounds over the 122-pound limit during the official weigh-in Saturday at the Yokohama Budokan.
He was later given two hours to shed the extra poundage, but still weighed a pound heavier (123) in his second attempt.
Sanchez meanwhile, made the scales at 121.7lbs.
The fight though will still push through, with Casimero wearing 10 ounce gloves.
No title is at stake in the bout serving as part of the fight card arranged by Treasure Boxing Promotion 7.
Casimero has been notorious as far as keeping his weight check during fight time.
The most memorable of those experiences was his title defense against Paul Butler in April of 2022 where he was stripped of his WBO title belt after being caught going to a sauna and cut weight in close proximity to his championship bout in England.
It has been a struggle since then for the fighter known as ‘Quadro Alas’ in his bid to make it back on top.
Holder of a 33-4-1 record (22 KOs), Casimero settled for a fourth round technical draw in his last fight a year ago against former world title holder Yukinori Oguni.
An accidental clash of heads led to the premature stoppage of the bout held in Ariake Arena in Tokyo, Japan.
Meanwhile, Sanchez holds a 21-3 record with 12 KOs. His last fight was a 10-round unanimous decision against Filipino and former world title challenger Arthur Villanueva in Atlanta last July.
