CEBU – Nonito Donaire Jr. is expecting warm weather conditions on Saturday night when he defends his World Boxing Organization (WBO) super-bantamweight title against Zsolt Bedak at the open-air Cebu City Sports Complex.
Two days before the title defense, the champion personally went to the fight venue, surveyed the area, and tried to get a feel of the surroundings, where organizers led by ALA Promotions, expect at least around 18,000 people to watch Donaire box for the first time in the Queen City of the South.
“I visited the venue. Nag-emulate ako ng oras sa pagpunta ko ng ring. Yung ang ginagawa namin in terms of derehydration prevention,” said the 33-year-old Filipino, as he allayed fears the sweltering heat this summer could throw him off inside the ring against his challenger from Hungary.
"We did simulation. It’s hot, but at night mahangin naman, pero wala pa yung mga tao (crowd) dun," added Donaire, who will be fighting in the same venue that hosted a crowd of 15,000 when Z Gorres lost to Fernando Montiel in a battle for the WBO super-flyweight title on February 24, 2007.
Donaire said his team has already made ample preparations in the event of humid weather come fight night.
“We’ve already managed to cover that with our icing, drinking proper amount of electrolytes, salt, sodium, to taking water,” said the Filipino Flash ((36-3, 23 KOs), who is making the first defense of the 122 lbs. crown he won over Cesar Juarez last December.
“So we all prepared in that sense to properly hydrate myself if it goes a long round.”
The 32-year-old Bedak (25-1, 8 KOs) also doesn’t worry about the weather conditions when he vies for a shot at a world title for the second time.
“It’s nice weather. And the fight will be in the evening so it’s not bothering us anymore,” said the Hungarian challenger.
