NONITO Donaire Jr poured out all his frustrations inside the ring and poor Stephon Young had to deal with it.
The “Filipino Flash” stopped Young with a sensational one-punch knockout to retain his World Boxing Association bantamweight crown on Saturday at the Cajundome in Lafayette, Louisiana (Sunday, Manila time).
Donaire was simply a class on his own, dominating Young, a last-minute replacement for the injured Zolani Tete, in the early rounds before setting him up for the kill, a massive left hook that took the fight out of the young challenger.
Time was 2:37 of the sixth round.
"It was a matter of time until I figured out that distance, so I kept pressuring him, and I kept taking him down until the right moment I could counter with a left hook, and that’s what happened,” said Donaire.
He also offered a short prayer for the 30-year-old Young who fell to 18-2 overall with 7KOs.
"I want to put prayer warriors into effect for my opponent Stephon Young, that he has a speedy recovery and is in good health," added Donaire.
The 36-year-old Filipino, now 40-5, with 26 KOs, advances to the final of the World Boxing Super Series bantamweight championship against the winner of the Naoya Inoue-Emmanuel Rodriguez title match on May 18.
