NONITO Dainaire Jr. came back victorious Sunday (Manila time) after pulling off a unanimous decision win over Ruben Garcia Hernandez at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
The ‘Filipino Flash’ dominated his Mexican foe throughout their 10-round bout to win by scores of 100-90, 97-93, 99-91.
It was the first fight of the 34-year-old Donaire in almost a year or since losing his World Boxing Organization (WBO) super-bantamweight crown against unbeaten Jessie Magdaleno in November of 2016 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Donaire (37-4, 24 KOs) is fighting as a featherweight anew in his first outing under new promoter Richard Schaefer of Ringstar Sports after parting ways with Top Rank shortly following the loss to Magdaleno.
Despite the year-long layoff, Donaire felt good about himself.
“I boxed very well which is something I haven’t done in a long time. I moved my legs well and maintained it throughout the whole fight,” he said.
“I’ll go look at this fight and see what I should have done to improve. It’s great to get the victory and get a great learning experience under my belt,” added the four division champion.
Hernandez, eight years younger than Donaire, fell to a 22-3-1 record, with 9 KOs. The Mexican admitted the Filipino was the better fighter between them.
“Nonito was very smooth and moved around well. I couldn’t get to him because of that. He adjusted to everything I did,” said the native of Mexico City.
