CEBU CITY – Nonito Donaire Jr. takes his act to the Queen City of the South as he defends his World Boxing Organization (WBO) super-bantamweight title against Zsolt Bedak on April 23 at the Cebu City Sports Complex.
ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer confirmed the change in venue of the 12-round title match originally scheduled at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
This marks the first time Donaire will be involved in a title match in Cebu and the first world championship bout here since Donnie Nietes retained his WBO junior flyweight crown with a unanimous decision win over Francisco Rodriguez Jr. last July.
Arriving for Donaire’s first defense of the 122-lbs. championship is Top Rank Promotions chairman Bob Arum, Aldeguer added.
Bedak, 32, is a former member of the Hungarian Olympic team that competed in the 2004 Summer Games in Athens.
He owns a 25-1 record with 8 KOs. He vied for the same WBO world title in 2010, but lost to Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. in a 10th round stoppage.
Donaire (36-3-1, 23 KOs) won his fourth world title last December following a tough unanimous decision win over Mexican Cesar Juarez in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
