NONITO Donaire tries to turn back the clock Sunday (Manila time) as he makes a ring comeback against Andres Campos of Chile in a 12-round fight at the Casino Buenos Aires in Argentina.
It will be the first bout for the 42-year-old Filipino in the last two years since suffering a 12-round decision against Alexandro Santiago of Mexico for the WBC bantamweight championship.
This time, the interim WBA bantamweight crown will be at stake as Donaire tries to seize the title and the moment in his bid to return among the elite fighters in the 118-pound division.
Both Donaire and Campos made weight during the official weigh-in on Saturday.
The ‘Filipino Flash’ tipped in at 117.9, while Campos came exactly at 118.
Winner of the bout that serves as part of the WBA’s annual ‘KO Drugs’ festival will meet the winner of the Antonio Vargas-Daigo Higa welterweight championship match on July 30.
Vargas is the regular WBA title holder.
Donaire holds a 42-8 record with 28 KOs, but lost his last two fights against Santiago and two-time undisputed champion Naoya Inoue.
Campos meanwhile, has a record of 17-2-1 with 6 KOs.
Donaire’s bid for boxing glory comes a month before another Filipino boxing legend in Manny Pacquiao makes his own comeback when he vies for the WBC welterweight title against champion Mario Barrios.
