NONITO Donaire is pumped up for his first world title defense on home soil, where he clashes with Zsolt Bedak of Hungary with his World Boxing Organization super bantamweight belt on the line in Cebu on April 23.
This early, Donaire is eager to win before home fans but is not about to underestimate Bedak when they face off at the Cebu City Sports Center, in the fight done by Top Rank Promotions.
“I’m excited knowing that I get to fight in front of my people,” said Donaire during Thursday’s press conference at the ELJ Building inside ABS-CBN. “Alam natin na magaling din ‘yung kalaban at sana mabigyan namin ng exciting fight ‘yung mga tao.”
“I’m just very grateful to have this opportunity to fight in the Philippines,” he added.
Donaire goes into the fight with a 36-3 record with 23 knockouts against Bedak, who has a 25-1 win-loss slate.
“We are not taking it lightly dahil Hungarian ‘to. Hungry din,” said Nonito’s trainer and father Nonito Donaire Sr. in jest.
But Donaire Sr. said they are going all out to win in front of the Filipino crowd and avoid a stunning upset in Cebu.
“Lahat ng nakakalaban ni Nonito, they are looking for an upset kaya gagawin natin lahat para hindi mangyari ‘yun,” said Nonito Sr.
ABS-CBN will air the fight live on The Filipino Channel and on SkyCable and Destiny Cable Pay-Per-View. It will also be shown on Channel 2 on a delayed basis.
