Pinoy Laurente named Asia's top junior boxer in 2016 ASBC Best of the Asians awards
Philippine boxing's rising star Criztian Pitt Laurente won the Philippines' first gold medal in the 2016 Children of Asia Games.

EMERGING boxer Criztian Pitt Laurente was one of three Filipinos honored in the Asian Boxing Confederation (ASBC) Best of the Asians 2016 awards.

Laurente captured the Best Asian Men’s Junior Boxer award for the year, while Pat Gaspi was named Best Asian Coach of 2016. Karina Picson, meanwhile, won the Best Asian Supervisor plum in the awards that was determined through voting on social media in 14 different categories.

The 16-year-old Laurente took 82 percent of the votes for the best junior boxer award in a year that saw him win a gold medal in the Children of Asia Games in Yakutsk, Russia - the first Filipino to do so.

He also had respectable performances in the ASBC Asian Confederation Junior Boxing Championship and the Aiba Junior World Boxing Championship.

On the other hand, Gaspi had 62 percent of the votes to take the best coach plum. Currently the head of the ASBC coaches commission, Gaspi guided the Philippines to medals in the Aiba Youth World Boxing Championship and the ASBC Asian Confederation Youth Championship.

Picson, who got 50.2 percent of the votes, was a top supervisor in various Aiba and ASBC events as well as multi-sports competitions.
