Charly Suarez settles for silver in Olympic qualifying after finals loss to Mongolian boxer
Charly Suarez lost in two judges' scorecards in the finals.

OLYMPIC-BOUND Charly Suarez finished with a silver medal in the Asia/Oceania Olympic Boxing Qualification Tournament after dropping a split decision to Dorjnyambuugiin Otgondalai of Mongolia in the lightweight finals in Qian’an, China.

Two judges gave the nod to Otgondalai in a rematch of the 2014 Asian Games lightweight gold medal bout which the Filipino also lost in Incheon, South Korea.

But it's still mission accomplished for the Filipino boxers as Suarez and Rogen Ladon secured berths in the Rio De Janeiro Olympics despite their defeats in the finals.

Suarez beat Chinese bet Shan Jun of China via a second-round technical knockout in the semifinal round to clinch a spot in Rio while Ladon eked out a victory over Devendero Singh of India in the light flyweight semifinals.

Ladon also settled for a silver in the Asia/Oceania OQT after a finals loss to Hasanboy Dusmatov of Uzbekistan.

Bantamweight Mario Fernandez and welterweight Eumir Felix Marcial captured bronze medals in their respective division but lost in the box-off for a ticket to the Rio Olympics.

More Filipinos could still qualify in the Olympics via the Aiba World Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Baku, Azerbaijan in June.
