Nesthy Petecio fails in bid to qualify for Olympics, falls in first match at Women's World Championship

Nesthy Petecio falls at the first hurdle in Kazakhstan.

NESTHY Petecio failed in her bid to qualify for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, losing to Zohra Ez Zahraoui of Morocco in her first bout in the Aiba Women’s World Boxing Championship in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Petecio lost by split decision in the flyweight bout on Saturday, dashing the Philippines hopes of sending a Filipina to the Olympic boxing competitions.

Josie Gabuco stayed in the hunt after beating Sevda Asenova by majority decision to move into the next round of the light flyweight division.

That division, ,however, is not part of the Olympic events this year.

Bantamweight Irish Magno lost a unanimous decision to Bolortuul Tumurkhuyag of Mongolia on Friday.
