LIKE most people concerned about Manny Pacquiao’s health ahead of the biggest fight of his career, Mommy Dionisia Pacquiao was glad that her son opted to just coach Kia in his last PBA game before flying to the US to train for his showdown against Floyd Mayweather Jr.
The younger Pacquiao, the Carnival’s playing-coach, earlier hinted he planned to suit up against Blackwater on Saturday, but ended up staying in the sidelines after arriving at The Arena in San Juan late for their Commissioner’s Cup game against the Elite.
Mommy D heaved a huge sigh of relief as her son decided against playing.
“Kinakabahan ako baka ma(saktan) yung katawan niya. Sabi ko ingat lang,” said the Pacquiao matriarch, who sat courtside along with other family members.
“Pero hindi na ako kinabahan (nung nakita ko na mag-coach na lang siya),” she was quick to add. “Masayang-masaya ako, kasi paalis na siya ngayong araw.
“Bawal rin sa kanya matagal maglaro kasi malapit na yung fight. Coach lang siya.”
It was the first time Mommy D managed to watch her son live in the PBA after seeing Manny and the Carnival only on TV in the first few games.
“Masaya ako. Proud ako talaga sa kanya,” the 65-year-old Pacquiao said, although Kia wound up suffering a 115-104 defeat against its fellow expansion team.
