Milan Melindo suffers 7th-round TKO in failed bid at world title

    Oct 7, 2018

MILAN Melindo failed in his bid to become a world champion anew after losing via seventh-round stoppage to reigning World Boxing Council (WBC) light-flyweight title holder Ken Shiro on Sunday in Yokohama, Japan.

The 26-year-old Japanese champion kept his Filipino challenger at bay by making use of his longer reach, punishing Melindo with constant jabs and quick combinations that later left a gash above the eye of the ALA Boxing Promotions veteran.

Melindo suffered the cut midway through Round Six that left him bloodied as Shiro kept the pressure on the former world champion.

The fight was officially halted at the 2:47 mark of the seventh round by referee Laurence Cole as the ring physician deemed Melindo unfit to continue fighting upon examining the cut above his eye.

The title defense was the fourth for Shiro, who remained unbeaten in 14 fights (8 KOs).

Melindo, 30, fell to a 37-4 record with 13 KOs. He also lost to Japanese Ryoichi Taguchi on New Year’s eve last year via unanimous decision in their title unification bout.
