LAPU-LAPU City – Arthur Villanueva and Milan Melindo got back on track Saturday after beating their respective Mexican foes in similar fashion before a modest crowd at the Hoops Dome gym here.
Villanueva scored a split decision win over Victor Mendez to clinch the World Boxing Council (WBC) interim super-flyweight title, while Melindo eked out the same result against Victor Olivo in an entertaining 10-round bout at flyweight.
‘King Arthur’ won it by scores of 116-112, 115-111, and 113-115, while Melindo had it 96-94.94-96.
It was the first fight for both warriors since losing their respective world title bids one after the other.
Melindo lost by sixth round technical decision to Javier Mendoza of Mexico in their International Boxing Federation (IBF) flyweight title fight in May.
On the other hand, dropped a 10th round technical decision to Puerto Rican McJoe Arroyo in their IBF super flyweight championship match last July in El Paso, Texas.
