Pacquiao steps up call for megafight, says it has to happen even if Mayweather is 'afraid of me'

    Nov 23, 2014

MACAU -Manny Pacquiao stepped up his call for a megafight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. shortly after his one-sided victory over Chris Algieri, saying the face-off should happen even if the enigmatic American is 'afraid of me.'

“It’s kinda like that (he’s afraid of me),” Pacquiao said before leaving the media center in his latest statement about the only fight fans want to see for the two superstars of boxing.

The eight-division world boxing champion said it's time for Mayweather to give the fans what they want.

“The fans deserve that fight, it’s time to step up,” he said in the press conference. “The people deserve that fight. It’s time to make that fight happen.”

Asked why he has suddenly become aggressive in calling out Mayweather, Pacquiao said the fight has long been overdue and fans already have a stake in the fight.

“I think, right now, the fans are involved in this fight already. So it has to happen, the fans have been talking, they want it,” he said, adding he is leaving the negotiations up to his promoter, Bob Arum.

Here's a video of interview with Pacquiao and Arum about the Mayweather fight:

Arum sounded pissed having to answer another round of questions about the Mayweather fight, but said he remains optimistic that it will happen in the first six months of 2015.

“Every place we go, they ask us, when is it going to happen, where is it going to happen?” Arum said.

“I say, enough is enough. Let’s just make the fight happen. Let’s get it done,” added the 82-year old promoter. “We will do what we can to make that happen!”
