Mayol foiled in his bid for second world title

    Sep 23, 2012

RODEL Mayol failed in his bid to win a second world title, getting knocked out by reigning champion Carlos Sanchez in the ninth round of their International Boxing Federation super-flyweight bout at the Gimnasio Polifuncional in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico Saturday night (Sunday, Manila time).

The 31-year-old Mayol was counted out by referee Allen Huggins after the Mexican champ sent him down through the ropes. The end came at the 2:25 mark of the ninth round.

Mayol was attempting to win a second world championship after briefly reigning as World Boxing Council light-flyweight champion in 2010. His record now stands at 31-6-2, with 22 KOs.

It was the second successful title defense for 21-year-old champion Sanchez, who improved to 15-1-1, with 8 KOs.

The day was an unfortunate one for Filipino fighters as former world champion Florante Condes also lost by unanimous decision to Hekkie Budler in their International Boxing Organization minimumweight championship bout at Kempton Park in South Africa.

The fight was the first in the last 13 months for Condes, a former IBF minimumweight title holder. The 32-year-old Filipino has lost his last two fights and now holds a record of 25-7-1 with 21 KOs.
