MARK Magsayo continues his climb from a long layoff after scoring a dominant 12-round decision over former world champion Pungluang Sor Singyu of Thailand at the Bohol Wisdom gym in Tagbilaran City, Bohol over the weekend.
The man they call ‘Magnifico’ won the 12-round bout by scores of 120-108, 118-110, and 118-110 in only his second fight this season after being on the freezer for more than a year.
Magsayo’s victory in the fight card billed ‘Pride of Bohol,’ raised his unbeaten record to 20-0, with 14 KOS, while taking the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) Asian Boxing Council featherweight belt.
The 24-year-old pride of Tagbilaran, now under Vladimir Boxing Promotions, admitted he has yet to totally shake off the rust and believes he still needs one or two more tune-up fights before he officially vies for a world title.
Magsayo has been vocal about his wish to challenge reigning World Boxing Organization (WBO) champion Oscar Valdez of Mexico.
The camp of the unbeaten Filipino will take a rest for the moment, but after a few weeks, is set to start training and conditioning again.
Vladimir Promotions is eyeing to have Magsayo fight one more time before the end of the year, although it’s not discounting the possibility of fighting for a first-ever crack at a world title should an opportunity comes along the way.
Pungluang, the former WBO bantamweight champion, saw his record fell to 53-7 overall, including 35 KOs.
The 29-year-old Thai is best remembered for scoring a ninth-round TKO win over AJ Banal to win the world 118-pound championship in 2012 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Banal was a former stablemate of Magsayo with Cebu-based ALA boxing gym.
