Trainer says Pacquiao 'dad bod' not a concern after almost a year of inactivity

KUALA LUMPUR - Manny Pacquiao seems to be in 'dad bod' shape these days but it's not much of a concern as far as his camp is concerned.

Buboy Fernandez, the longtime friend and trainer of Pacquiao, said almost a year of inactivity is to blame for unflattering images of the champ's body during a photo shoot on Thursday as part of the promotion for his July 15 world title fight against Lucas Matthysse here.

"Busog lang 'yan," Fernandez joked when asked about his thoughts on a pictorial photo shot in a gym in Manila in which Pacquiao failed to hide his beer belly while in complete training gear.

Fernandez was quick to issue a reminder that the boxer-senator last fought in July 2017 in a disputed 12-round loss to Jeff Horn to yield his World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight belt.

"Halos isang taon na yun," he said, although Fernandez added Pacquiao has not been remiss in his roadwork lately as he warms up for his training camp for the Matthysee title fight.

"Saglit lang kay brad 'yan. Hindi naman hirap magpakundisyon 'yun," added Buboy.

Pacquiao, who will turn 40 this December, said age is but a number.

"It's what we can discipline," stressed the fighting senator during the second part of the two-city press tour of the Pacquiao-Matthysee fight at the Axiata Arena.

"It's not about the number, about the age. It doesn't matter," said Pacquiao. "I believe I can still fight and it depends on how you discipline yourself in training, how you prepare for a fight."

Fernandez said training camp for Pacquiao will soon commence in General Santos City as soon as the press tour is done.

And for someone who has known Pacquiao for so long, Fernandez said getting in top shape for the Matthysee fight is not going to be a problem for the Pacman.

"Si brad hindi mo na kailangan pang itulak yan sa training, hindi katulad ng ibang boxers," he said. "Siya mismo ang nagtutulak sa sarili niya."
