November comeback shelved as Pacquiao out six months after shoulder surgery

LOS ANGELES – It may take another week before Manny Pacquiao can return to Manila - and half a year before the Pacman can  to the ring.

After getting medical opinion, the Filipino eight-time world division champion was advised to undergo surgery this week to repair a tear in his rotator cuff after aggravating his right shoulder injury during his showdown against Floyd Mayweather last Saturday (Sunday, Manila time) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

The 36-year-old Pacquiao visited orthopedic surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache, according to an ESPN report, in the company of adviser Michael Konz and aide Jojo Sta. Teresa at the Kerlan Jobe Orthopedics office. ElAttrache is the same surgeon who operated on the torn Achilles tendon of Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant.

The right shoulder of the boxing champ was no longer in a sling two days after the bout, but admitted the pain is still unbearable at times especially when he tries to raise his arm.

ElAttrache immediately advised the Filipino boxing star to undergo surgery within the week, forcing Pacquiao to reschedule his supposed Wednesday departure for Manila to next week.

Following surgery, Pacquiao needs to rest five to six weeks and he estimates it will take five to six months for the injury to fully heal, although he’s likewise not discounting the possibility of taking a longer period of time to recover.

ElAttrache had a longer time frame, telling ESPN that it will take nine to 12 months for Pacquiao's recovery.

Approximately, Pacquiao would be out of commission for a minimum period of half a year, meaning he most likely won't be fighting again until next year.

That should ruin any plans for a November ring comeback.

“November fight is not possible,” said a person close to the boxing legend.
