Pacquiao taps two Filipinos, one foreigner as sparring partners for Matthysse fight

HEAVY training for Manny Pacquiao rolls off by next month when the boxing legend begins sparring session for his fight against Lucas Matthysse of Argentina.

The 39-year-old Pacquiao will be helped whip into fighting form for the July 15 bout in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia by a foreign sparmate and two local fighters.

Sparring begins by June 1.

“I have tapped three sparring mates, two Filipino boxers and one foreigner,” said Pacquiao from General Santos City, where he set-up his training camp and has begun doing strength and conditioning workouts under trainer Buboy Fernandez.

Aquiles Zonio, the liason officer of Pacquiao, said the sparring partners tapped were just as big and has almost the same fighting style as the 35-year-old Matthysse, the reigning World Boxing Organization (WBO) 147-pound title holder.

Zonio however, said Pacquiao chose not to reveal the names of the three sparring partners at the moment.

The 39-year-old Filipino ring great opened training camp early this week.

Training in GenSan will be until Sunday, after which Pacquiao and his team fly out of Manila the following day for the Filipino senator to catch up with the resumption of the Senate session on May 15.

Training camp shifts to Manila for the next two weeks, and then back to General Santos by June 1 when the Senate goes on a break again and just in time for the sparring phase to begin.

At the moment, Pacquiao tries to keep in shape by doing road work daily, running for about 10 rounds in the rubberized track oval of the Antonio C. Acharon Memorial Sports Complex under the supervision of conditioning coach Nonoy Neri.

The afternoon is spent at the Wild Card boxing gym with Fernandez who help Pacquiao does the mitts and do his things with the heavy bags, speed bag, and double-end bag.
