Manny Pacquiao needs an emphatic victory against Chris Algieri, admits trainer Roach

DOWN to his final week in training camp with reigning world welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao, trainer Freddie Roach hopes the Filipino boxing great will grant his one simple wish come fight time with challenger Chris Algieri.

“I hope he (Pacquiao) gets him (Algieri) in one (round),” Roach told a few Manila-based sportswriters after doing the mitts with the 35-year Pacquiao on Wednesday in General Santos City.

Although not one to look past the 5-foot-10 challenger from New York, Roach believes the eight-time world division champion will be too much for Algieri when they finally step inside the Cotai Arena in Macau on November 23 for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight championship.

Not really known as a tough fighter, the 30-year-old Algieri only has eight knockouts in 20 pro fights and was actually knocked down twice by former Pacquiao sparmate Ruslan Provodnikov before rallying in the late rounds to wrest the WBO light-welterweight title last June.

Those were enough to convince Roach Algieri can’t withstand the power of Pacquiao.

“Manny looks tremendous. He has worked hard against the best sparring partners he has ever had. He knows what is at stake here,” said Roach, a five-time recipient of the coveted Trainer of the Year.

“Believe me, he wants an emphatic victory. He needs an emphatic victory. That is why he has gone the extra mile in this camp to achieve that.”

The Pacquiao entourage is set to leave for Macau by late Monday afternoon shortly after doing his final sparring session in training camp.

The team of Pacquiao will be going to the former Portuguese colony on board two separate airplanes courtesy of AirAsia, which is the official carrier of the Filipino in his second and last fight for the year.

Pacquiao and AirAsia are also negotiating on a possible endorsement deal involving the boxing superstar, who also serves as congressman from the lone province of Sarangani and playing-coach of Kia Sorento in the PBA.
