Sales in Manny Pacquiao's merchandise stores perk up as 'Pacfloyd mania' gains steam

    Apr 17, 2015

THE 'Pacfloyd mania' has driven business for the boxing icon's merchandise stores.

Rellie de Leon, general manager of Manny Pacquiao's group of companies, revealed to that sales in Team Pacquiao stores have picked up since the May 2 (May 3, Manila time) megafight against Floyd Mayweather was sealed last February.

De Leon said buyers are mostly balikbayans and tourists, all eager to snap up items ranging from boxing gloves to caps to T-shirts to bring home to friends and relatives back home.

Gloves, according to de Leon, are being sold for as high as P2,000, while caps and t-shirts bearing the image of our ‘Pambansang Kamao’ are attracting the most number of buyers.

“Pinoy pa din naman ang malakas bumili, almost everyday. Pero may mga Fil-Ams din na galing abroad, mga Japanese, saka mga Americans na umo-order or bumibili ng mga iba-ibang items sa Pacquiao stores in bulk,” said De Leon, who also oversees the dormitory located at the MP Tower in Paquita, Sampaloc, Manila, and the travel agency also owned by the boxing icon.

Caps and shirts sold for P600 each and boxing shorts pegged at P1,500 are a hit among Filipino balikbayans.

“Kasi ginagawa nilang (buyers) pasalubong sa mga mahal nila sa buhay,” added de Leon, who’s also a close associate and bosom buddy of basketball’s Living Legend Robert Jaworski Sr.

De Leon said the line of Pacquiao merchandise will be expanded to include punching bags, hand wrap, speed ball, and even mouth piece. As it is, there are already Pacquiao basketballs and basketball jerseys being sold in a tie-up with Accel, the Pacman being the playing-coach of expansion team KIA Motors in the PBA.

De Leon also revealed plans to open more outlets and distribute goods through Toby’s.

De Leon admitted that every time the 36-year-old fighting Congressman of Sarangani Province has an upcoming fight, it is but normal for Team Pacquiao stores located at Robinsons Galleria in Ortigas and Robinsons in Ermita to enjoy a significant spike in sales.

The rise is all the more felt  now that Pacquiao faces the biggest fight of his life in what could easily go down as the richest bout ever in boxing history, de Leon added.

“Actually, every fight ni Manny, we experience some increase in sales. And that’s natural naman na every fight, people are buying because they (customers) associate themselves with Pacquiao,” De Leon stressed.

By handling the business ventures of the eight-time world division champion, De Leon said he has a first-hand look at how Pacquiao has brought so much pride and honor to his countrymen.

“Sa immigration pa lang (in airports), if you’re a Filipino, alam nila (immigration officers) Pacquiao. Because one thing he did to our country, he brings pride and glory. And that’s priceless,” he said.

“Who among the Filipinos can do that? I think nobody.”
