LOS ANGELES - Manny Pacquiao has shrugged off Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s acclaimed defense and his vaunted shoulder-roll tactic, saying it's punches and not anything else that score in fights.
“Hindi naman tayo ano (ilag) dyan," the Filipino ring icon told Spin.ph after another hard day at the gym days before his May 2 (May 3, Manila time) showdown with the elusive Mayweather. "Kung umiiskor ang shoulder roll niya, matakot tayo. Sa boxing, suntok naman ang umiiskor eh.”
Pacquiao is also confident enough with the game plan laid down by trainer Freddie Roach to claim they have discovered the ‘cheat code’ to unlock Mayweather’s top defensive strategy, which his 45 previous opponents, twice against Jose Luis Castillo and Marcos Maidana, failed to crack.
Brimming with confidence, Pacquiao hinted they have been religiously studying video tapes of past Mayweather fights in a bid to to finally put an end to his run of 47 successive victories without a loss.
“Napag-aralan natin 'yan., just left and right lang 'yan,” said the cat-quick puncher, hinting that constant right jabs and a surprise release of his deadly left hooks can bring down Mayweather's defense.
Since Roach started developing the once left-heavy Pacquiao into a two-fisted killing machine after their loss to Erik Morales in 2005, Pacquiao has evolved into a free-flowing fighter who relies on in and out attack to avoid counter punches from his rivals.
“Malaki talaga ang ibinago ng laro ni Manny. Saka yung kanyang depensa at atake, maganda ang naging kumbinasyon. Yung in and out niya, malaking bagay 'yun. Sasakit ang ulo ni Mayweather dun,” said two-time world champion Gerry Penalosa.
“Saka hindi uubra ang shoulder roll ni Mayweather kay Manny. Kaliwete si Manny eh. Kanan ang jab niya, sanay si Mayweather na sa kanan mag-shoulder roll, dun pa lang, saliwa na agad siya,” added the former WBC superflyweight and WBO bantamweight champion.

Roach insisted that Mayweather’s shoulder roll will not work against southpaws like Pacquiao, and even warned doom for the flamboyant American if he utilizes the same defensive tactic come fight night.
“It’s so overrated. It doesn’t work against southpaws, if he does do it … he will have to pay for it,” said Roach.
The many-time Trainer of the Year awardee expects Pacquiao to dominate every round of the fight.
“Manny punches hard, he gives great combinations. I am predicting him to win every round. His left hand is really powerful, we will have a good chance at knocking him out,” Roach said.
