SPORTSCENTER, the news program of giant American sports network ESPN, will be showing a special feature delving on Manny Pacquiao’s humble beginnings on Monday.
Entitled ‘Manny Pacquiao: The Roots,’ the segment will focus on the early life of Pacquiao before he became a boxing superstar and will air on SportsCenter at 11 p.m. EST on Sunday in the US (Monday, 11 a.m. Manila time).
The segment is part of ESPN's buildup for Pacquiao's fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 3.
Sportscaster and Spin.ph columnist Chino Trinidad was one of the resource persons interviewed in Manila by renowned writer Greg Garber and Jon Fish, who have won an Emmy Award for their work at ESPN Films.
Trinidad said the feature was supposed to be just a segment on SportsCenter, but Garber and Fish are now planning to do a full documentary on Pacquiao’s early life through its ESPN 30 for 30 after seeing the material at hand.
“Gagawa sila ng short feature within SportsCenter. They thought it was just another story. Pero nung nag-kukuwento na ako, doon na nag-unfold. Bubuoin nila into a documentary ‘yung 30 for 30,” said Trinidad, who had covered Pacquiao’s early career.
ESPN had previously featured Mayweather through an all-access interview with Stephen A. Smith
