UNBEATEN Mark Magsayo makes his debut under MP (Manny Pacquiao) Promotions as he faces tough Mexican Rigoberto Hermosillo in a 10-round featherweight bout on Saturday at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles (Sunday, Manila time) .
The 25-year-old Tagbilaran Bohol native didn’t have trouble making the weight on Friday, tipping the scale at 127 lbs. after more than two months of training at the Wild Card Gym under Hall of Famer Freddie Roach and Filipino assistant Marvin Somodio.
But Hermosillo, 28, could give him trouble inside the ring as he is described by MP Promotions President Sean Gibbons as a typical Mexican warrior and a rugged southpaw.
“Rigoberto comes to fight. He got a big heart and this is his opportunity,” said Gibbons. “A lot of these guys won’t fight Rigoberto because he’s a left hander, he’s a tall guy, and an aggressive guy.”
Rigoberto (11-2, 8 KOs) came in at 126.6 lbs.
Magsayo (20-0, 14 KOs) was originally set to meet Jose Haro of the US, only for the American to announce his retirement from boxing due to family matters at the last minute, forcing the Filipino camp to look for a replacement on a three-week notice.
“It’s the best we can do at short notice because we need to get Mark back on the ring, we need to get him fighting moving forward,” said Gibbons.
Magsayo hasn’t fought since August last year after a 12-round unanimous decision win against former world champion Panya Uthok of Thailand.
The fight card is promoted by TGB Boxing and will be shown over FS1.
