REDONDO BEACH, CALIFORNIA – Jonas Sultan found Sunday the perfect time to rest less than a week before his attempt at winning a first-ever world championship.
The challenger to Jerwin Ancajas’ International Boxing Federation (IBF) super-flyweight throne spent the entire day in the team’s quarters at Monterey Park here in the company of brothers Edito and Edmund Villamor and ALA boxing stablemate Donnie Nietes.
With no scheduled training, the 26-year-old Sultan just stayed home and tinkered with his phone playing games, although most of his time saw him playing the guitar as he sings his blues away.
Edito even videod Sultan belting out his favorite ditty, ‘Bakit Ba?’ by the group Siakol.
“Yes sir, paborito niya yang kanta na yan,” Villamor shared when asked by SPIN.ph on why he chose to post on his account Sultan singing the song about a man left behind by his girl and popularized in the 90’s by the popular alternative band.
“Mahilig talaga siyang mag gitara. Yan ang pampa-relax niya.”
Other than a short video interview by ESPN5 reporter Renz Ongkiko to talk about his May 26 title bout against Ancajas at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, California, boxing took a backseat for this native of Tampilisan, Zamboanga del Norte, who’s fighting in the U.S. for the first time.
“Wala na, relax na siya ngayon,” said Villamor. “Bukas na lang ulit.”
By that, the veteran trainer meant a light workout for Sultan at the Wild Card gym in Hollywood before finally breaking camp.
The team then goes on a three-hour ride from here to Fresno for fight week.
