Johnriel Casimero bows to Jonas Sultan in eliminator for next foe of world champ Jerwin Ancajas

    Sep 16, 2017
Johnriel Casimero lost via unanimous decision in the title eliminator to Jonas Sultan.

JONAS 'Zorro' Sultan won the biggest fight of his young career after outpointing two-time world champion Johnriel Casimero in their title eliminator match at the Waterfront Casino and Hotel in Cebu City.

The 25-year-old Sultan, who's from Zamboanga del Norte but fights under the ALA boxing stable, dominated his more experienced opponent in their 12-round bout to win by unanimous decision, 117-111, 116-112, and 115-113.

Sultan now earned a mandatory title crack at the International Boxing Federation (IBF) super-bantamweight title of fellow Filipino Jerwin Ancajas in a fight set April of 2018.

Zorro is now 14-3 with 9 KOs.

It was a disppointing loss for Casimero (24-4, 15 KOs) who failed to get on track for most of the match. Despite suffering a cut in the 10th round due to an accidental headbutt, Casimero desperately went after Sultan in the last two rounds, but failed to turn the tide around in his favor.

Casimero was hoping to earn a third world title after previously holding the IBF light-flyweight and flyweight crowns.

Earlier, Arthur Villanueva retired Richie Mepranum on his stool at the end of round four of their bantamweight fight.

Mepranum, who once fought for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) flyweight title against Julio Cesar Miranda, refused to continue fighting heading to the fifth round, allowing Villanueva to win via a TKO

Villanueva, who lost to McJoe Arroyo for the IBFsuper-flyweight title in 2015, hiked his record to 31-2 with 17 KOs.
