BRACE for an all-Filipino fight with no less than a world championship on the line.
Former two-time world champion Johnriel Casimero secured a fight with Jonas Sultan on Sept. 16 in an intriguing 12-round title eliminator clash in Cebu, the winner becoming a mandatory challenger to reigning World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior bantamweight champion Jerwin Ancajas.
Casimero, 27, was the former International Boxing Federation (IBF) flyweight champion who relinquished his belt late last year as he moved up in weight.
His international promoter Sampson Lekowicz said the move to junior bantamweight was meant to pursue big-money fights including one against former World Boxing Council (WBC) super flyweight king Roman 'Chocolatito' Gonzales and Ancajas himself.
Casimero (24-3, 15 KOs) makes the first step toward that goal when he takes on Sultan, nicknamed 'Zorro,' in the undercard of Milan Melindo's defense of his IBF junior flyweight crown against Zekkie Budler of South Africa.
The Casimero-Sultan 12-round battles serves as the main undercard of Pinoy Pride 42 at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino.
