BRISBANE, Australia - It wasn't exactly the perfect start for Filipinos fighting in the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Jeff Horn world welterweight championship.
Jonel Dapidran lost by unannimous decision to hometown boy Brent Dames in the first match of the special seven-fight card topbilled by the Pacquiao-Horn World Boxing Organization (WBO) showdown Sunday at the massive Suncorp Stadium here.
Dames won the six round junior welterweight match by scores of 58-56, 58-56, 59-55.
It was the second loss in 10 matches - and the first overseas - for Dapidran, a second cousin of Pacquiao on his mother side.
The record of the 19-year-old Filipino fell to 8-2, with 4 KOs. Dames improved to 6-3 overall.
Another Filipino in International Boxing Federation (IBF)junior bantamweight champion Jerwin Ancajas is seeing action as the main attraction in the undercard as he defends his title against Teiru Kinoshita of Japan.
