Jerwin Ancajas to put on a show in US debut as he stakes IBF title belt vs Israel Gonzalez

    Feb 3, 2018
"Kailangan ma-impress yung manonood ng laban," said Jerwin Ancajas on his first US bout vs Israel Gonzalez

JERWIN Ancajas is raring to put on a show in his first fight on U.S. soil Saturday (Sunday, Manila time) when he stakes his International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior bantamweight title on the line against Israel Gonzalez of Mexico.

The 26-year-old champion from Panabo, Davao del Norte said he’ll enter the ring at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas as if he will be vying for his first world championship fight.

The bout, set for 12 rounds, marks Ancajas’ fourth defense of the 115-lbs. belt he won over McJoe Arroyo of Puerto Rico in September of 2016.

“Gutom na Jerwin po ang ipapakita ko,” said Ancajas in a correspondence with SPIN.ph on Friday when he tipped the scale at 114 3/4 pounds the official weigh-in for the fight.

“Alam naman natin yung kalidad ng mga Amerikano, alam nilang piliin sino yung dapat suportahan. Kailangan ma-impress yung manonood ng laban.” added the champion from Manny Pacquiao (MP) Promotions.

So far Ancajas (28-1, 19 KOs) is nothing but impressive in his last three matches, all of which he won by stoppages.

He stopped Jose Alfredo Rodriguez in seven rounds during his first defense of his title in Macau last year.

Teiru Kinoshita of Japan and Irishman Jamie Conlan didn’t last that long as the Filipino stopped them both in the sixth round of separate title defenses later in 2017.

The champion plans to do the same against Gonzalez (21-1, 8 KOs).

“Susubukan agad ni Jerwin sa early rounds si Gonzalez,” said trainer and manager Joven Jimenez.

But the Ancajas camp is not underestimating the Mexican challenger, who came in at 114 lbs. and is also seeing action on American soil for the first time.

“Determinado rin yung kalaban kaya hindi rin dapat magkumpiyansa,” Jimenez stressed.

Third man on the ring will be referee Rafael Ramos, while the three judges scoring the bout are Joel Elizondo, Fernando Villareal, and Lisa Giampa.
