FRESNO, California — Jerwin Ancajas is doubly motivated as he stakes his International Boxing Federation super-flyweight title on Saturday.
Jerwin and Ruth are expecting their third child and first daughter by September.
It adds motivation for the 26-year-old Ancajas as he tries to keep his crown against countryman Jonas Sultan in a 12-round championship bout at the Save Mart Center.
“May pinagkukunan ako ng inspirasyon ngayon. Masaya po ako kasi buntis yung asawa ko,” said the soft-spoken fighter from Panabo, Davao del Sur. “Magkakaanak kami ng babae kaya dagdag blessing ito.”
“Kaya inspired ako sa laban (na ito).”
Ancajas is again expected to get a six figure purse for his fight against the 26-year-old Sultan after already breaching the mark in his last title defense against Mexican Israel Gonzalez, which the Filipino won by 10th round stoppage.
“Kailangan pang magpursige sa laban. Kailangan pa talaga ng sipag kasi madadagdagan na naman kami sa pamilya,” he said.
Ancajas again trained twice on Tuesday (Wednesday, Manila time) under Joven Jimenez at the fitness gym of the Courtyard Marriot, one in the morning and the other late in the evening just shortly after they watched Game Four of the NBA Western Conference finals between the Houston Rockets and the defending champion Golden State Warriors.
Before dinner time following the workout, the champion was already down three pounds from the 115-pound limit, still three days before the official weigh-in this weekend.
“Ready na po sir,” said the soft-spoken former Palarong Pambansa gold medalist after having dinner of brown rice, fish and nilagang baka.
Ancajas and Sultan, along with the other fighters involved in the promotion put up by Top Rank, will participate in a media workout on Wednesday at the nearby Heartbeat boxing gym.
Top Rank chairman Bob Arum is set to arrive on Thursday for the fight’s final press conference, while unified world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua is expected to be at ringside on fight night as countryman Khalid Yafai stakes his World Boxing Association super-flyweight crown against David Carmona.
