NOT even a draw against relatively unknown Alejandro Santiago could prevent Jerwin Ancajas from his desire of meeting the best in boxing’s super-flyweight division.
The 26-year-old Ancajas, will take the first step towards that direction when he travels to Thailand this weekend and watch in action reigning World Boxing Council (WBC) counterpart Srisaket Sor Ruvingsai.
It will be the first time Ancajas will personally meet the 30-year-old Ruvingsai, considered one of the top fighters in the world today, pound-for-pound.
Ancajas and his small entourage will arrive in the country Monday from Oakland, California after the Panabo, Davao del Norte native retained his International Boxing Federation (IBF) crown with a split draw against Santiago.
After a few days of rest, Ancajas will fly to Thailand on Friday along with trainer-manager Joven Jimenez and international matchmaker Sean Gibbons to be at ringside when Ruvingsai stakes his title against Mexican Iran Diaz.
“I still want all the champions at 111 (pounds). Nothing has changed,” said Ancajas, who didn’t hide his disappointment after settling for a draw against the 22-year-old Santiago.
At the most, the camp of Ancajas is looking to set up the unification match with Ruvingsai by next year, provided the hard-punching Thai disposes his Mexican challenger.
Top Rank Promotions’ Bob Arum said he can make the Ruvingsai fight possible during the lead up to the Ancajas-Santiago showdown.
